The Closer you are, the Better Aim you (and the slug) have
One of the most obvious factors in proximity is aim. The closer you are, the better aim you have when you throw objects. However, the inverse is true, too: When the slug spits slime at you, they are harder to dodge.
Proximity is Key in Getting things Done
Most missions that involve a slug will require you to perform stuff on the slug, such as feeding it. These actions are ONLY accessible when you're as close to the slug as possible.
Running Away is an Option
If you find yourself in too much danger, or you've completed what you need to do and need to get away, running away will be your best option. If you are on unslimed ground, you can get away faster (two proximity steps) whereas if your feet are treading in sticky slime, running away will only distance your enemies by one proximity step.
You can only Move if you're Unstuck
If your legs are mired in slime, or worse you've fallen into it, you'll be unable to approach or run away. Once you pull your feet free, you can move again.
If the Slug is Incapacitated, you can opt to Move Past it
This is an alternative to running away, and in some cases, such as if a slug is impeding your path, it's your only option. If you are as close to the slug as possible and it's been stunned in some way, you can "run past" the slug to achieve a "victory."
